Contract Applications Test Engineer - Windows/Networking

Requirements:

• Experience testing Windows desktop applications, particularly Microsoft .NET-based applications
• Experience with functional, system, regression and integration testing
• Ability to create test cases and test procedures and carry out requirements-based testing
• Experience with UI and usability testing, defect investigation and management, technical documentation and test reporting
• Knowledge of networking technologies and protocols, including TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, DHCP, DNS and VPNs
• Experience with SNMP, network device management, and Wireshark or similar packet/network analysis tools
• Experience testing applications that interact directly with networking, communications or security hardware is particularly useful
• Current SC/DV clearance is preferred; candidates whose clearance has been on hold within the last 12 months may be considered, subject to eligibility for transfer or reactivation
• Ability to meet relevant nationality and security eligibility requirements
• Advantageous experience includes Python scripting, test automation, REST API testing, Linux, Azure DevOps or Jira, and Network+, CCNA or similar networking knowledge or qualifications
• Previous experience in Defence, Government, Cyber Security, communications or another high-integrity engineering environment is advantageous

Responsibilities:

• Create and execute test cases and test procedures
• Perform functional, regression, system and integration testing
• Test Windows/.NET desktop applications, including application workflows, usability and UI functionality
• Test communications between software applications and network-connected devices
• Investigate, reproduce and document software defects
• Analyse network traffic using Wireshark or similar tools
• Test networking and device-management functionality, including SNMP
• Support requirements validation and traceability, and produce clear test documentation and reports
• Work with software developers and systems engineers to troubleshoot issues
• Contribute to test automation where appropriate

We are supporting a specialist technology and engineering business with the appointment of an experienced Applications Test Engineer. The role involves hands-on testing of Windows-based applications in complex networking and communications environments, working alongside an established team of software and systems engineers to help ensure reliable performance before release. This is an initial 6–12-month contract, fully onsite in Derbyshire, with a negotiable day rate depending on experience and outside IR35.
