z/OS Mainframe Systems Programmer

Salary: £28,500 - 56,500 per year

Requirements:

• 10+ years of hands-on experience in z/OS systems programming.
• Deep knowledge of IBM z/OS, SMP/E, TSO/ISPF, UNIX System Services (USS), SDSF, JCL, and RACF.
• Strong expertise in Parallel Sysplex implementation, support, architecture, and administration.
• Extensive experience installing, configuring, customizing, supporting, and maintaining IBM and CA/Broadcom mainframe products.
• Experience in large enterprise environments, preferably banking or financial services, and supporting mission-critical production environments with stringent SLAs.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex technical assignments independently.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams.
• Desired: Experience with ACF2 security administration and GDPS environments.
• Desired: Working knowledge of Assembler, REXX, OMEGAMON, RMF, SMF, and SAS.
• Desired: Experience with mainframe automation and operational tooling, disaster recovery and high-availability architectures, hybrid infrastructure, or modernization initiatives.
• Desired: IBM Z platform or mainframe systems programming certifications.

Responsibilities:

• Install, configure, customize, upgrade, and maintain IBM z/OS operating systems and IBM and CA/Broadcom system software products.
• Plan and execute operating system upgrades and software maintenance using SMP/E.
• Administer Parallel Sysplex environments to support availability and performance.
• Monitor system performance, plan capacity, and optimize resources.
• Analyze and resolve complex system-level issues involving z/OS, middleware, and infrastructure.
• Collaborate with application support, infrastructure, security, operations, global teams, and business stakeholders to maintain platform stability.
• Implement software maintenance, fixes, service packs, and vendor-recommended updates.
• Support disaster recovery, business continuity, and high-availability initiatives.
• Maintain system security controls and comply with organizational security, compliance, and operational standards.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and operational runbooks.
• Participate in root cause analysis, problem management, change management, release management, and implementation activities.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior team members and act as a technical expert for z/OS platform services and system software.
• Provide on-call and after-hours support for critical production changes and incident resolution, including planned maintenance and weekend work when required.
• Drive continuous improvement in system reliability, performance, and automation, taking ownership of issue resolution.
