Lead Software Engineer - Linux

Salary: £50,000 - 65,000 per year

Requirements:

• Architect-level experience with Linux, including hands-on Windows-to-Linux migration experience
• Strong hands-on embedded Linux background with proficiency in C/C++
• At least 3 years of commercial object-oriented development experience in a C-like language such as C++ or C#
• At least 5 years of experience developing embedded Linux systems, with in-depth system architecture knowledge
• Experience developing for resource-constrained embedded platforms
• Experience using git version control on large-scale applications
• Ability to provide technical leadership to a sizeable team while remaining hands-on with development
• Desirable: experience modifying or porting C# applications to run on Linux
• Desirable: development within the Debian ecosystem, including CI/CD
• Desirable: experience with GUI/HMI applications for embedded Linux
• Desirable: familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio, XAML/WPF, and MVVM
• Desirable: experience with Agile methodologies such as SAFe
• Desirable: knowledge of M2M protocols such as Fieldbus, industrial Ethernet, and MQTT

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership and guidance to a development team transitioning from Windows to Linux development
• Shape the platforms technical direction as the architect-level Linux authority
• Modify existing C# code to run on Linux alongside embedded C/C++ development
• Liaise closely with our Germany office to ensure alignment between platform and application development
• Collaborate with the applications team leader to develop platform architecture and make full use of our Debian-based Linux platform
• Elicit requirements from stakeholders and produce technical specifications and documentation
• Support defect identification and resolution alongside our Software Test Team

We are a leading global supplier of industrial equipment to the food and beverage market, currently undertaking a major migration of our core platform from Windows to Linux. This is a high-visibility, hands-on technical leadership role based in Salford on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of three days per week in the office. We offer a salary of up to £65,000 plus benefits, and the opportunity to work closely with our international platform development team, including occasional travel to Germany, on next-generation products.
