Staff Software Engineer - Databases SRE (Remote)

Salary: £43,000 - 70,000 per year

Requirements:

• 8+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years in SRE, customer reliability engineering, or production engineering; formal customer reliability engineering experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong Kubernetes experience in AWS, GCP, or Azure, and familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Helm, Terraform, or Jsonnet.
• Experience operating multi-tenant production systems and designing and implementing SLOs.
• Technical leadership experience, including leading projects, mentoring engineers, and helping teams succeed.
• Experience with one or more programming languages, such as Go, Python, or Java.
• Experience with Linux internals and some knowledge of networking, cloud storage, and scaling.
• Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to reason about performance, scaling, and failure modes.
• Experience participating calmly and actively in blame-free incident response, following up on actions, and writing high-quality post-incident reviews.
• Ability to work autonomously and partner closely with product engineering teams.
• Intellectual curiosity, transparency, a bias toward action, and a kind, collaborative approach.

Responsibilities:

• Partner with product engineering squads and own production reliability for high-SLA and complex customer environments.
• Define and evolve per-tenant SLOs and reliability models, ensure customers meet SLO targets, and proactively reduce SLO burn to prevent recurring incidents.
• Review SLOs and investigate ways to reduce budget burn through improvements to monitoring, automation, self-healing, and autoscaling.
• Design and implement automation and solutions that improve reliability and scalability as demand grows.
• Improve customer observability and alert quality while reducing noisy escalations and operational toil.
• Develop fault-tolerant design patterns and promote reliability throughout the service lifecycle.
• Serve as a primary escalation point and participate in on-call and incident response, from investigation through resolution, post-incident reviews, and customer communications when needed.
• Lead customer-impacting incident response and post-incident reviews.
• Collaborate with engineering leaders to influence product strategy, roadmaps, feature design, and technical designs for scalability and operability.
• Contribute to design documents and code reviews, and collaborate with engineers across teams.
• Teach Site Reliability Engineering practices and encourage reliability considerations early in feature development.

For applicants in the UK, the base compensation range is £103,958–£124,750; actual compensation depends on experience and skillset.
