Linux System Administrator

Salary: £61,000 - 101,000 per year

Requirements:

• Eligible to meet UK Government and contractual personnel security requirements, including applicable residency requirements
• Right to work in the United Kingdom
• Some roles may be subject to nationality requirements where necessary to meet UK Government or contractual security obligations
• Excellent organisation and time management skills
• Working to ITIL best practices
• Desire to improve processes and look for the root cause of a problem
• Willingness to both share knowledge and learn from others
• Proactive approach to identifying risks and problems
• Proficiency in UNIX/Linux systems such as Red Hat, Debian, Solaris, and AIX
• Shell scripting experience such as Bash and KornShell
• Infrastructure as Code experience with Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, or Chef
• Knowledge of process and job control such as cron, at, and systemd timers
• Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NFS, SSH, and FTP
• Filesystem management experience including LVM, ext4, XFS, and ZFS
• Performance tuning and monitoring knowledge such as top, vmstat, iostat, sar, and netstat
• Exposure to automation software such as Ansible or Puppet
• Knowledge of scripting with Bash, Python, and/or Git
• Experience with AWS
• Automation tools experience such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef
• Virtualization and containers experience such as KVM, VMware, Docker, and Podman

Responsibilities:

• Provide first and second level technical support for incidents and problems
• Monitor overall system performance and ensure smooth system functionality
• Create, maintain, and use documentation
• Help build compliance with processes and policies
• Implement standards, policies, and procedures for continual service improvement
• Work within multiple teams
• Be innovative and analytical with a good eye for detail
