Job Description

Salary: £30,000 - 72,802 per year

Requirements:
  • Around two years of professional engineering experience in a systems, software, integration or test role; experience may be from any sector.
  • Working knowledge of systems engineering practice, including requirements, architecture, interface management, integration, verification and validation, and lifecycle management, with examples of applying it.
  • Strong Python skills, including the ability to build and test a model, simulation, test harness or analysis tool from scratch and explain design choices.
  • Responsible and effective use of AI-assisted tools for code, models and documentation; ability to review and test generated work, take ownership of what ships, and understand what must remain within a secure environment.
  • A systems mindset, including consideration of component connections, data flows, link failures, and modelling domains as objects, relationships and actions.
  • Working fluency with Git, Linux, Docker and an issue tracker such as Jira, and disciplined use of these tools.
  • Clear written and spoken communication with non-engineers, including military users, and confidence to challenge constructively.
  • A degree in engineering, computer science, physics or a closely related subject, preferably from a UK university, or equivalent demonstrable capability.
  • Familiarity with military targeting or planning processes, or willingness to learn them quickly.
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (such as SysML or Capella) or a requirements tool such as DOORS, Jama or Polarion is useful but not required.
  • Exposure to Cursor-on-Target, TAK, SAPIENT or other defence data standards, or to C4I and networked systems, is useful but not required.
  • Exposure to machine learning, computer vision, signal processing or edge deployment is useful but not required.
  • Experience working with or inside the UK Armed Forces or MoD is useful but not required.
  • Existing SC or DV clearance is useful but not required. You must hold current SC clearance or be able to obtain it; this requires continuous UK residence for at least the last five years, unrestricted UK right to work and no other bar to vetting. Some work is restricted to UK nationals.
  • Must be able to commute to central Bristol. The role requires unrestricted right to work in the UK; visa sponsorship is not available.
Responsibilities:
  • Work with domain experts and MoD users to capture concepts of operations and user needs, then translate them into requirements, interface definitions and system architecture for software engineers.
  • Build models, simulations, test harnesses and analysis tools in Python to size designs, run trade studies and support engineering decisions with evidence.
  • Own integration by defining interfaces between our products and Army headquarters systems, planning integration work, and leading end-to-end verification and validation.
  • Deploy, configure and evaluate the system at MoD sites and on exercises, capture user needs, and feed them back into requirements and the backlog.
  • Contribute to the products object model, defining entities such as targets, sensors, tasks and units, their relationships and the actions that can happen to them.
  • Plan and track work packages in Jira, maintain code and models in Git, and produce documentation, trade studies and design review materials for other engineers.
  • Write Python regularly while applying a systems-level perspective to engineering work.

More:

We are a UK-owned sovereign defence AI company based in Bristol, building a targeting and planning suite for UK land forces. Our software generates AI-ready target data at the sensor, enriches it for intelligence staff, and supports courses of action for operations and planning staff. We have no foreign shareholders or parent company, and hold positions on Ministry of Defence framework agreements and a British Army digital programme. Our team includes former Army officers who shaped the doctrine our software encodes. We are a small team where engineers work directly with end users, own whole features and ship to live Army trials. This role works across the systems that connect sensors, decision-makers and effectors, including systems already in service. The office is in central Bristol, with a hybrid culture typically involving three office days per week and flexibility around project needs; regular UK travel to MoD sites and Army units, including occasional overnight stays on exercises, is required. Pay is £30,000–£72,801.81 per year, and the work location is in person. We sponsor SC clearance applications.
