Back-End Engineer

Salary: £70,000 - 110,000 per year

Requirements:

• Comfortable writing clear, testable Python; we do not need you to be an expert.
• 1+ years of commercial engineering experience.
• Working knowledge of relational databases; we use PostgreSQL.
• Curious about the full stack and willing to pick up front end (React, TypeScript) over time.
• Clear written and spoken communication, with the ability to explain technical work in a way non-engineers can act on.
• You care how your work affects customers and use experiments and metrics to guide decisions.
• Experience writing automated tests and a serious approach to code quality and safe releases.
• You use AI tools such as Cursor or Claude Code in your daily flow to help with boilerplate and research.
• Bonus: familiarity with Python web frameworks such as Django or FastAPI.
• Bonus: exposure to Docker, AWS, or Kubernetes at any level.
• Bonus: exposure to data tooling such as Snowflake or Looker.
• Bonus: a strong numerical or technical background, such as a degree in maths, physics, computer science, engineering, or relevant industry experience.

Responsibilities:

• Work on the services that decide which repeat customers get a loan, at what price, and how much they can borrow.
• Own backend features end-to-end, from design through shipping and monitoring in production.
• Re-architect our flex-loan repeat offer pipeline, which decides eligibility, pricing, and borrowing limits for new loans.
• Pick up front-end work over time and grow into a full-stack role.
• Maintain and support the core services behind repeat lending, including the lending_decision app inside iwoca-django, the repeats pricing and offer-amount services, and the customer account pages.
• Help monitor production and troubleshoot issues when they come up.
• Work closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Analytics to build technically sound solutions that work for customers.
• Show up to team rituals such as stand-ups, retros, and planning with context and questions.
• Write clean, well-tested Python and take part in code reviews.
• Ship behind split tests and measure impact using Looker rather than gut feel.
• Help small business owners access follow-on funding faster and more clearly.
