Job Description

Salary: £42,000 - 77,000 per year

Requirements:
  • We require experience in professional, non-internship software development.
  • We require experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design.
  • We require experience with the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations, or experience in development in the last 3 years.
  • We require experience designing or architecting new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling, or experience building complex software systems successfully delivered to customers.
  • We require experience programming with at least one software programming language, or experience in professional, non-internship software development.
  • We prefer a bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • We prefer experience with the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • We prefer a bachelors degree or equivalent in Computer Science.
  • We prefer experience in embedded development in C/C++, or experience programming with at least one software programming language.
  • We prefer experience with general troubleshooting and debugging of hardware, or experience in development in the last 3 years.
Responsibilities:
  • We design and build real-time middleware and runtime components, including the data-exchange layer, type system, and communication patterns that connect distributed control applications across languages and hardware.
  • We integrate industrial automation platforms and hardware protocols, and build device drivers that bridge them onto the platform.
  • We build the bridge to the cloud by designing reliable metric publication, command handling, and telemetry from the edge into AWS with the right delivery guarantees for each data class.
  • We work at the boundary of distributed and real-time systems, ensuring bounded latency, predictable behavior, and graceful degradation when connectivity is lost.
  • We architect and implement runtime and real-time middleware that runs on embedded and edge controllers as well as in the cloud, with focus on determinism, reliability, and resource efficiency.
  • We own the edge-to-cloud communication path, designing how telemetry, metrics, and commands flow between devices and AWS services with appropriate quality of service, backpressure, and store-and-forward behavior.
  • We engineer for real-time correctness by reasoning about latency budgets, throughput, and failure modes in a distributed system adjacent to physical control loops.
  • We raise the engineering bar through strong testing, performance benchmarking, code review, and operational excellence.
  • We collaborate across hardware, controls, security, and operations partners to turn ambiguous requirements into robust, shippable software.
  • We mentor more junior engineers and help shape the roadmap for the runtime and middleware layer.
