Senior HPC Engineer

Salary: £53,000 - 93,000 per year

Requirements:

• We require a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
• We require 5+ years of Linux administration experience, ideally in an HPC environment.
• We require strong troubleshooting and IT service management skills.
• We require proficiency with automation/configuration tools such as Ansible, Puppet, GitLab, or Terraform.
• We require experience with Docker and container orchestration.
• We require scripting skills in Bash, Python, or Perl.
• We require strong project/time management and communication skills.
• We require a proactive, adaptable mindset and a passion for learning.
• We require proven ability to mentor, guide, and influence technical teams, with an interest in developing people leadership and progressing toward a management role.
• We prefer experience with DevOps tools such as OpenStack, Kubernetes, or CI/CD.
• We prefer cloud administration and virtualization experience.
• We prefer certifications such as LPIC-2/3, CompTIA Linux+, or ITIL Foundation.
• We prefer knowledge of GPUs, RAID, and HPC clustering technologies.

Responsibilities:

• We act as the final escalation point for complex Linux issues and deliver expert troubleshooting.
• We support the Technical Program Manager in team leadership activities and act as a deputy when required.
• We help drive team performance, knowledge sharing, and operational excellence.
• We lead deployment of new technologies and compute platforms via Jira workflows and ensure smooth handover.
• We scout, evaluate, and pilot emerging technologies, and run proofs of concept focused on scalability and supportability.
• We manage end-to-end technical projects, including scoping, planning, deployment, documentation, and handover.
• We coordinate with global sites on installations, upgrades, and infrastructure enhancements.
• We define and maintain IT standards and frameworks to ensure consistency, security, and excellence.
• We optimize Linux systems for performance, availability, and compliance through proactive monitoring.
• We participate in CCRBs and drive continual service improvements.
• We provide 24x7 on-call support on rotation for incidents and maintenance.
• We use Jira Service Management and ITSM tools to manage escalations, track issues, and document changes.
• We support in-house applications while ensuring policy alignment.
• We balance project delivery with support duties in a fast-paced environment.
• We collaborate across development, security, and operations to align IT with business needs.
• We mentor colleagues and prepare clear documentation and presentations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
