Software Engineer (Backend and AI Systems)

Salary: £42,500 - 55,000 per year

Requirements:

• We need someone who can turn a business problem into working code, with the judgement to choose the right approach.
• You have shipped backend systems in production and can work independently within a defined scope.
• You are fluent in at least one modern backend stack and understand databases, APIs, queues, testing, and deployment.
• You have built with LLMs in production, or you want to go deeper in AI engineering.
• You understand prompt design, vector databases, retrieval, and the failure modes of putting a model in front of a paying client.
• You can move between languages and choose the one that best fits the project, and explain your reasoning.
• You can explain an automated workflow to a business owner in clear, non-technical language.
• You want to be part of a small team building things people rely on, and you care about the quality of your work.
• Strong applicants will be fluent in some of our core stack and able to pick up the rest quickly, including PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Python.
• You should be familiar with our AI and LLM tools, including Claude for Platforms, Claude Code, OpenAI API, ElevenLabs, vector databases, and retrieval.
• You should understand our infrastructure stack, including AWS, Cloudflare, and Twilio.
• You should understand payments and security basics, including Stripe, encryption, data protection, and UK GDPR.
• You should be comfortable using Git, and we use GitHub.
• Bonus experience includes React Native, workflow automation tools like n8n, Make, or Zapier, custom WordPress development, WooCommerce, Sentry.io, custom PHP servers, and SEO.

Responsibilities:

• Build backend systems for bespoke client work, taking features from brief to delivery against an agreed design.
• Help design and develop our Orbit platform, the core product our business runs on.
• Build internal tools that make our delivery team faster and our builds more consistent.
• Build production systems on top of large language models, including APIs like Claude and OpenAI, with retries, rate limits, structured outputs, and human review.
• Take AI-assisted prototypes and harden them for production with strong testing and review discipline.
• Design secure walled-garden AI environments using Claude for Platforms, and use Claude Code for fast AI-assisted development.
• Build and connect agent workflows that link AI agents to client tools like email, CRM, and Slack.
• Integrate and manage Stripe payments, and monitor transactions through the Stripe dashboard.
• Run infrastructure on Cloudflare and AWS, with Twilio for messaging.
• Keep client data secure by design, using sound encryption and protocols, and ensure our builds comply with UK GDPR.
• Maintain codebase integrity and manage deployments with Git, hosted on GitHub.
