Java Developer
Job Description
Salary: £127,400 - 127,400 per year
Requirements:- Java 11 and Python 3
- Spring Boot and Python Flask microservices
- Spring Security and OAuth2
- JavaScript UI frameworks, including React
- Strong HTML and CSS skills with awareness of accessibility considerations
- OpenShift
- Modern DevOps and CI/CD practices, including deployment pipelines, Jenkins, and Docker
- Designing and developing with relational and NoSQL databases, particularly MongoDB and Postgres
- Significant commercial experience delivering high-quality software collaboratively in high-performing, cross-functional development teams
- Experience designing, gaining consensus on, and implementing technical solutions for software development projects
- Experience developing solutions using human-centred, research-driven, inclusive design practices
- Experience designing and implementing solutions using service-based and event-based architectures
- Experience using testing tools for unit testing, including system test automation frameworks
- Experience with cloud monitoring, telemetry, intelligence tools and processes, including Grafana
- Experience incrementally replacing enterprise legacy systems
- Experience working in Agile delivery models
- Experience defining infrastructure as code
- Experience using UI pattern libraries to achieve consistent, tested, high-quality interfaces
- Experience with code quality, monitoring, telemetry, and analytics tools
- Desirable: AWS Lambda, S3, Cloud Formation, Aurora/Postgres, API Gateway, and CDK TypeScript
- Enhance our customer-facing product portfolio based on customer feedback
- Develop and support our customer-facing products in line with our product and architecture roadmaps
- Improve digital sustainability and help reduce architectural and technical debt
- Demonstrate excellent, sustainable, collaborative software development practices focused on highly readable and maintainable artefacts
- Participate actively in team events, lead where specialist knowledge is required, and help improve team processes through inspection and adaptation
- Engage with wider communities of practice and interest to share knowledge, techniques, and experience
- Ensure high-quality solutions through unit testing, appropriate code coverage, and code analysis using code quality tools
- Ensure our software complies with non-functional requirements, including accessibility, security, UI/UX, performance, maintainability, and deployability
- Troubleshoot development and production issues across multiple environments and operating platforms, including our AWS-based modern stack and legacy ETL and database components
- Use collaborative development practices such as pairing, mobbing, code reviews, system design, and requirements analysis and refinement
- Coach and mentor other team members as appropriate
- Support and deliver disaster recovery assurance for our digital services, working toward a sustainable Recovery Time Objective of 2 hours and Recovery Point Objective of zero

We are a public sector organisation with offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are hiring a Java Developer for an initial 6-month contract at up to £490 per day outside IR35, based on experience. The role is mainly remote, with occasional visits to our Edinburgh or Glasgow office. We offer the opportunity to work on customer-facing digital products within a collaborative team, supporting modern cloud-based services as well as legacy systems.
