Cassandra Database Engineer

Salary: £40,000 - 70,000 per year

Requirements:

• We are looking for a Data Engineer with strong Apache Cassandra experience.
• We would like someone with experience in keyspace design, replication strategies, partitioning models, and data modelling aligned to query patterns.
• We need practical knowledge of performance tuning, including compaction strategies, consistency levels, read/write path optimisation, and JVM/GC tuning.
• We are looking for experience managing Cassandra cluster operations, including node additions/decommissions, repairs, backups, and disaster recovery.
• We would like experience using monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpsCenter, or equivalent.
• We need familiarity with CQL query development and best-practice access patterns.
• We would value experience working with infrastructure and security teams on hardening, encryption, and authentication/authorisation (RBAC).

Responsibilities:

• We will need you to design, implement, and maintain Apache Cassandra clusters.
• We will need you to develop and optimise data models aligned to query patterns, including denormalisation, partition key design, avoiding hotspots, and wide partitions.
• We will need you to perform performance tuning across compaction strategies, consistency levels, read/write paths, and JVM/GC settings.
• We will need you to manage cluster operations such as node additions/decommissions, repairs, backups, and disaster recovery.
• We will need you to monitor cluster health using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpsCenter, or equivalent.
• We will need you to support CQL query development and advise application teams on best-practice access patterns.
• We will need you to collaborate with infrastructure and security teams on hardening, encryption at rest and in transit, and authentication/authorisation.
• We will need you to produce technical documentation, including data models, runbooks, and operational procedures.

We are supporting one of our investment banking clients in hiring a Data Engineer for an initial 6-month contract with scope for extension. The role is based in London with 2-3 days per week in the office, and the rate is up to £700 per day inside IR35.
