Head of Engineering

Salary: £65,000 - 105,000 per year

Requirements:

• Experience leading software engineering teams of 15–40+ people
• Experience managing senior engineers, Technical Leads and/or Engineering Managers
• Experience improving engineering delivery, quality and predictability
• Experience using engineering metrics to drive performance and accountability
• Experience modernising engineering practices through tooling, automation and AI
• Experience partnering closely with Product and senior stakeholders
• Experience in SaaS, platform, fintech, regtech or other complex technology environments
• Technical credibility to challenge decisions, support technical leaders and influence engineering direction; this is not a hands-on coding role
• Familiarity with cloud-based environments, including Azure, APIs, CI/CD, automated testing and modern software engineering practices

Responsibilities:

• Lead and develop Engineering Managers, Technical Leads and Software Engineers
• Improve delivery predictability, quality, automation, engineering standards, maturity and overall team performance
• Introduce meaningful engineering metrics and dashboards to improve visibility and decision-making
• Improve CI/CD, testing strategies, release processes and technical governance
• Champion AI-assisted engineering and modern development practices
• Support roadmap planning, technical prioritisation and capacity management
• Identify capability gaps, coach future leaders and help shape the future engineering organisation
• Work with Product and senior leadership to align engineering effort with business priorities, balancing delivery speed with quality, scalability and long-term maintainability
• Contribute to platform consolidation, engineering modernisation and AI-assisted software development initiatives

We are supporting a high-growth, private-equity-backed SaaS technology business in appointing a Head of Engineering. This newly created leadership role will help take a mature engineering function of around 20 engineers to the next level, bringing structure, accountability and modern practices to a talented team. The business has ambitious growth plans and significant investment in engineering, tooling and AI. The role offers strong executive exposure and the opportunity to influence strategy and shape the future engineering organisation. It is hybrid in West Yorkshire, with 2–3 office visits per month, and offers a salary of £90,000 plus benefits.
