Database Engineer

Salary: £62,000 - 102,000 per year

Requirements:

• A degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline
• Proven production MongoDB administration experience, including sharding and replication
• Strong PostgreSQL or equivalent enterprise RDBMS experience
• Strong grounding in backup, recovery, point-in-time recovery (PITR) and high availability
• Scripting and automation experience with Bash, Python or Golang
• Exposure to Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab or broader DevOps practices is an advantage

Responsibilities:

• Administer MongoDB sharded clusters and replica sets, alongside PostgreSQL environments
• Tune performance, queries and configurations for high-traffic, data-intensive workloads
• Own backup, restore, PITR and high-availability strategy across globally distributed systems
• Monitor platform health using Ops Manager, Prometheus and Grafana
• Work with software and infrastructure teams on schema design, automation and application performance
• Evolve the MongoDB and relational database estate supporting our platforms

We are hiring for a permanent Database Engineer (MongoDB / PostgreSQL) role in the United Kingdom on behalf of a global technology company. We combine advanced computing, digital innovation and deep scientific expertise to address challenges in natural resources, the energy transition and infrastructure. Data is central to our business, with enormous volumes supporting global production systems and a substantial UK high-performance computing environment. This is a hands-on, engineering-led role with scope to build, automate and improve the database platform, rather than a traditional production DBA position. Compensation is negotiable.
