Senior PHP Developer

Salary: £80,000 - 80,000 per year

Requirements:

• Experience with Doctrine ORM or another data-mapper ORM such as Hibernate or Entity Framework, including the ability to explain how the unit of work behaves and when changes reach the database
• Modern PHP 8, applying SOLID principles in applications composed from libraries rather than one large opinionated framework
• PostgreSQL schema design, query optimization, and migrations
• Routine automated testing with PHPUnit or an equivalent, alongside static analysis and coding standards enforced in CI
• Git and pull-request review as part of the regular working day
• Docker for local development and deployment
• Enough JavaScript and React experience to work confidently on front ends; around a fifth of the work involves front-end development
• Also valued: Symfony experience; workflow engines, state machines, or long-running case management systems; financial systems, ledgers, or reconciliation against an external system of record; document processing, OCR, or data extraction; and experience in fleet, leasing, or another regulated environment

Responsibilities:

• Design and build a modular platform as we move away from our legacy system
• Build new modules on top of our internal Composer packages and shared architecture
• Design modules from high-level business requirements
• Develop solutions for long-running business processes using our configurable workflow engine
• Build systems for reconciling charges, payments, refunds, and fees using a double-entry ledger and an external finance system
• Process incoming documents and files, including scanned paperwork and OCR, and match extracted information to customers, vehicles, and people
• Integrate with systems of record through file-based exchanges and vendor APIs
• Share ownership of the platform and its development across our small team
• Help bring on and support a junior developer

We are a fleet management company recently acquired by a blue-chip bank. We are moving away from a bespoke, forty-year-old system over the coming years, while the bank introduces a new leasing platform. Much of our business capability will not move to that platform, so we are building the modules needed to fill those gaps. We already run a growing estate of production services, each with its own React front end and a shared architecture. Our stack includes PHP 8.3, Slim 4, PHP-DI 7, Doctrine ORM 2 and DBAL 3, PostgreSQL 16, React 18, React Router 6, TanStack Query 5, PHPUnit, PHP_CodeSniffer, Phan, Playwright, Docker, nginx, PHP-FPM, AWS, and GitHub Actions. Our small team consists of two developers, two business analysts, and a project manager, combining the scope of a large programme with the autonomy and ownership of a small team.
