Lead Software Engineer

Salary: £50,000 - 62,000 per year

Requirements:

• 10+ years of software development experience, including at least 2 years in a senior or lead engineering role
• Comfort working across the full stack, including performance-critical low-level code in C++ or Rust and Python for data analysis and exploratory workflows
• Strong architectural knowledge of distributed systems, real-time streaming technologies such as Kafka and WebSockets, and persistence strategies across relational, document, and time-series stores
• Familiarity with or genuine curiosity about functional programming, including languages such as F#
• Proven track record designing and delivering scalable, maintainable systems with end-to-end technical ownership
• Pragmatic, outcome-driven approach and willingness to engage directly with users and stakeholders
• Experience with modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD, containerisation, and infrastructure-as-code
• A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline is a plus
• Experience in motorsport, aerospace, engineering, or another domain where software performance has direct physical-world consequences is a plus

Responsibilities:

• Lead a team of 3–5 engineers, setting technical direction and owning architecture and delivery across a diverse software estate
• Contribute hands-on to software design and code, and set technical standards through code reviews
• Mentor and develop engineers through coaching, knowledge sharing, and regular feedback
• Manage technical dependencies and risks across concurrent projects, balancing feature delivery with technical debt
• Work with the performance functions we support to translate their problems into deliverable software
• Contribute to technology strategy across Performance Technology and the wider software group

We are the Atlassian Williams F1 Team, a British Formula 1 team with a history dating back to 1977 and 16 F1 World Championship titles. We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join our Performance Technology group and build bespoke, high-performance software supporting our Aerodynamics, Vehicle Dynamics, and Vehicle Performance functions. Our software estate includes desktop applications in C++ and C#, web applications in React and TypeScript, Python analysis tools, and backend services in C++, Rust, F#, and C#.
