Lead DevOps Engineer

Salary: £40,000 - 60,000 per year

Requirements:

• 5+ years of Python development experience writing structured, testable application code
• Strong understanding of Python packaging, virtual environments, dependency management tools such as pip or Poetry, and code-quality tools such as pylint, black, and mypy
• Experience building Python CLI tools and automation frameworks using Click, Typer, or similar
• Hands-on experience with Jinja2 templating for reusable, parameterized configuration and infrastructure code generation
• Experience with pytest for unit and integration testing
• Strong Terraform skills, including module design, state management, remote backends, workspaces, and dependency graphs
• Proven experience programmatically generating Terraform HCL with Python and Jinja2, producing valid, linted, plan-ready infrastructure code
• Familiarity with Terraform tools such as tflint, tfsec, terraform-docs, Terragrunt, or Atlantis
• Understanding of Terraform provider internals and resource lifecycle management
• Hands-on Puppet experience writing manifests and modules, managing Hiera data hierarchies and node classification, and using r10k or Code Manager workflows
• Experience managing Linux and Windows environments with Puppet at scale
• Familiarity with puppet-lint, rspec-puppet, automated Puppet module testing pipelines, and Puppet Enterprise or open-source Puppet Server administration
• Proficiency in PowerShell for Windows Server administration, task automation, and hybrid cloud integrations, including AWS Tools for PowerShell or Azure PowerShell
• Experience writing reusable PowerShell modules and functions with appropriate error handling
• Familiarity with Pester for PowerShell unit testing
• Experience automating Active Directory, Group Policy, or Windows networking tasks with PowerShell
• Solid AWS experience, including EC2, EKS/ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, and CloudWatch
• Familiarity with CI/CD platforms and infrastructure code pipelines such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or GitLab CI
• Comfort working with Linux and Windows Server in production environments

Responsibilities:

• Design and develop scalable Python automation frameworks for consistent deployments across cloud and on-premises environments
• Build and enhance Terraform code-generation platforms using Python and Jinja2, producing validated, environment-specific infrastructure code from reusable templates
• Develop and maintain Puppet modules, manifests, and Hiera configurations for Linux and Windows environments at scale
• Create PowerShell automation for Windows server management, Active Directory administration, and hybrid cloud integrations
• Develop internal automation tools, command-line utilities, and APIs that enable engineering teams to self-serve common operational tasks
• Integrate automation frameworks with CI/CD pipelines for automated validation, testing, and deployment of infrastructure changes
• Implement testing strategies for infrastructure code, including unit testing, linting, and integration testing
• Partner with cloud, platform, and application teams to identify manual processes, reduce operational toil, and advance automation-first solutions
• Create documentation, standards, and runbooks for automation frameworks and infrastructure templates
• Participate in code reviews, share best practices, and improve the quality, security, and maintainability of automation solutions
