Principal Software Engineer - Squad Lead Engineer

Salary: £65,000 - 105,000 per year

Requirements:

• We seek demonstrated experience leading through influence, such as as a tech lead, feature lead, or guild lead, across design, delivery, and operations.
• We value a strong track record in at least one domain: distributed services, data platforms, or high-throughput web or mobile applications.
• We require advanced knowledge of Agile/Lean practices, including backlog refinement, technical grooming, and risk-based planning.
• We look for experience with test strategy, test automation, CI/CD quality gates, and release readiness.
• We require proficiency in one or more of the following: Java/JVM, JavaScript/TypeScript, .NET/C#, Python, C/C++, SQL, Linux, or Windows.
• We value experience with relational and non-relational data stores, performance tuning, and data modelling.
• We look for knowledge of CI/CD platforms, containers, cloud technologies, observability, and monitoring practices.
• We require an understanding of secure coding, performance optimisation, reliability engineering, and incident response.

Responsibilities:

• We rely on you to serve as the first line of technical escalation for the squads services and components.
• We ask you to facilitate team ceremonies, including refinement, technical grooming, sprint planning, and design reviews, with a focus on flow and outcomes.
• We expect you to translate product objectives into sound technical designs and testable acceptance criteria, and to decompose epics into implementable stories.
• We count on you to design and implement complex features, fix complex bugs, and improve performance.
• We ask you to define and uphold our Definition of Ready and Definition of Done, covering code quality, automated test coverage, security checks, and observability.
• We expect you to establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines, quality gates, and sensible branching and release strategies.
• We rely on you to drive a pragmatic quality strategy covering test-pyramid balance, contract tests, data management, environments, and non-functional testing.
• We ask you to partner with TIO on SLOs, alerting, runbooks, incident response, and post-incident learning.
• We expect you to help shape technical direction, guide delivery planning, drive quality strategy, and collaborate with Product, Architecture, QE, SRE/Platform teams, and partner squads to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable software.
