Senior Data Engineer

Salary: £60,000 - 100,000 per year

Requirements:

• Strong SQL skills.
• Proficiency in Python.
• Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language.
• Experience with big data technologies such as HDFS, YARN, MapReduce, Hive, Kafka, Spark, Airflow, or Presto.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Looker is advantageous.
• Solid background in data modelling, including the design, implementation, and optimisation of conceptual, logical, and physical models for scalable architectures.
• A degree in Computer Science; a BS is required and an MS is preferred.
• Curiosity and adaptability working with AI tools and automation.
• Experience using agentic engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks.
• Ability to drive an AI agent, verify its output, and ramp up on unfamiliar codebases with agent support.

Responsibilities:

• Build highly scalable, fault-tolerant distributed data processing systems for batch and streaming workloads handling tens of terabytes of data each day.
• Support a petabyte-scale data warehouse.
• Design and develop robust data solutions that streamline complex datasets into simplified self-service models.
• Develop pipelines that ensure high data quality and resilience to imperfect source data.
• Define and maintain data mappings, business logic, transformations, and data quality standards.
• Debug low-level systems, measure performance, and optimise large production clusters.
• Participate in architecture discussions, influence the product roadmap, and own new initiatives from concept to delivery.
• Maintain and evolve existing platforms, introducing modern technologies and architectures where appropriate.
