Senior Software Engineer

Salary: £40,000 - 80,000 per year

Requirements:

• A track record of building and shipping complex, real-world software systems, including owning meaningful pieces end-to-end
• System design and architectural reasoning, including understanding component interactions, failure modes, and boundaries
• Ability to decompose ambiguous problems and translate vague business needs into structured technical approaches
• Production-quality discipline, including testing, observability, error handling, and operational readiness
• Communication skills to explain technical trade-offs to non-engineers, write clear specifications, and build consensus
• Learning agility, including experience across more than one language or framework and comfort working in unfamiliar territory
• Ownership and initiative, including identifying problems and following through to resolution in production
• Nice to have: Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Copilot, or Cursor
• Nice to have: Ability to evaluate and validate AI-generated code to the same standard as human-written code
• Nice to have: Experience in public sector, health, housing, or local government domains
• Nice to have: Familiarity with .NET, Go, React/TypeScript, or similar modern stacks
• Nice to have: Experience with legacy modernisation and its constraints, risks, and stakeholder dynamics
• Nice to have: Exposure to platform or product-led engineering environments

Responsibilities:

• Decompose ambiguous problems into clear system designs, balancing immediate needs with long-term maintainability
• Design, build, and ship production-ready software across the full lifecycle, from specification through deployment and operability
• Work across legacy modernisation and greenfield development, often within the same product
• Own technical decisions for complex system components and explain trade-offs to product managers and principal engineers
• Define standards for testing strategy, code quality, observability, and documentation in your area of the codebase
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering colleagues to understand problems before building solutions
