Job Description

Salary: £68,000 - 108,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Expertise in Oracle Database (19c and above), including Grid Infrastructure, Recovery Manager, and Data Guard
  • Expertise in database management, performance tuning, and SQL optimisation
  • Expertise in provisioning databases on Linux platforms
  • Practitioner-level knowledge of cloud infrastructure technologies such as AWS and Microsoft Azure, and IaaS- and PaaS-based database solutions
  • Practitioner-level skills in Linux OS and scripting
  • Working knowledge of DevOps practices, continuous delivery tooling such as Terraform, Ansible, and Git, and database automation using these tools
  • Proven track record as a Database Infrastructure Engineer or Database Administrator
  • Experience providing effective database management and support in very large, highly available, enterprise-class environments
  • Experience with database provisioning, security, backups and restores, and on-premise to cloud migrations, with an emphasis on Oracle technology
  • Desirable: practitioner-level knowledge of SQL Server or PostgreSQL
  • Desirable: working knowledge of Agile deliveries, collaborative tooling and techniques including Jira and Kanban
  • Desirable: working knowledge of ITIL4 processes
  • Desirable: understanding of government or public sector technology requirements
Responsibilities:
  • Work in an Agile, fast-paced environment to design, deliver, and support database products and solutions
  • Ensure best practices are adhered to and guide teams on how to deliver and support quality database products
  • Design, implement, configure, and maintain critical database platforms in the cloud and on-premise
  • Ensure the availability and consistent performance of our products and services within agreed service levels
  • Proactively contribute to the Database Engineering Community of Practice by providing technical leadership and mentorship to less experienced team members
  • Manage databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems on-premise and in Cloud IaaS and PaaS environments
  • Configure and maintain database servers, including monitoring system health and performance, to ensure optimum levels of performance, availability, security, and automation
  • Support architects and developers so design, development, and implementation support efforts meet integration and performance expectations
  • Independently analyse, tackle, and correct issues in real time, providing end-to-end problem resolution
  • Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes
  • Assist developers with complex query tuning, schema refinement, and cloud migration approaches

We are HM Revenue and Customs, and this Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Database Specialist) role is based in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Telford, Cardiff, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. We offer a salary of 45,544 to 49,523 per year and flexible employment. We operate Flexible and Hybrid Working policies, with colleagues expected to spend 60% of their time in the office and, where the role allows, up to 2 days a week working from home. We provide a generous leave allowance starting at 25 days and increasing to 30 days, family-friendly policies, personal support, coaching and development, and pension contributions toward the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Please note that office locations must be selected carefully, as you will only be made one offer and location preferences cannot be changed after application. The role may require an office move in Telford in the future, and Leeds may offer a Moves Adjustment Payment for eligible current HMRC colleagues in Bradford.
