Senior Software Engineer, Robotics & Motion Control

Salary: £65,000 - 65,000 per year

Requirements:

• At least 5 years of relevant software engineering experience using C, C++, or Python.
• Strong software design fundamentals, including modular architecture, refactoring, testing, and version control.
• Practical experience controlling motors or servo mechanisms with closed-loop feedback, including PID/PI tuning and position or velocity control.
• Sound understanding of gearing, inertia, friction, backlash, acceleration, overshoot, oscillation, and stability.
• Experience with motor drives, feedback devices, and real-time software using an RTOS.
• A degree in engineering or equivalent qualification or experience.
• Linux development, scripting, and system diagnostics experience.
• General embedded systems experience.
• Experience with advanced control or estimation methods, such as feed-forward control, Kalman filtering, sensor fusion, or system identification.
• Experience with IMUs, gyroscopes, accelerometers, GNSS, or multi-axis motion-control systems.
• Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or Python-based control and simulation tools.
• Familiarity with interfaces such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART/RS-485, or Ethernet.
• Familiarity with ROS 2, ros2_control, CANopen/CiA 402, or EtherCAT.

Responsibilities:

• Take a leading, hands-on role in developing and evolving an advanced antenna controller system.
• Create reliable software to position and move antenna axes accurately and smoothly.
• Drive different motor types and use encoder and sensor feedback.
• Tune closed-loop systems and improve accuracy, stability, and performance using measured data.
