Senior DevOps Engineer

Salary: £58,000 - 66,000 per year

Requirements:

• Unrestricted right to work in the UK; this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
• A strong track record of success in DevOps roles.
• Experience as a DevOps Engineer; experience in an ISP, telco, managed services, or complex heterogeneous environment is preferred.
• Adaptable scripting experience, ideally with C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, or .NET.
• Experience with automation tools such as Azure DevOps, GitLab, Puppet, and Git, and with CI/CD pipelines, complex integrations, and test frameworks.
• Experience with complex networking and firewall environments.
• Production experience with multiple AWS capabilities and Kubernetes debugging.
• Demonstrated ability to manage technical debt effectively.
• Familiarity with SRE principles and lean methodologies.
• Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills, including the ability to apply DevOps and SRE techniques to unfamiliar problems.
• Ability to influence others on standards and best practices, including people outside our team.
• Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Elasticsearch log standardization, Kibana dashboards, and data analysis.
• Good coding ability and scripting skills.
• Hands-on AWS experience, including CloudFormation, Route 53, S3, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, Lambda, security, and troubleshooting.
• Experience with certificate management and automation.
• Ability to write documentation for peers and operations colleagues.
• Knowledge of database systems and models, Windows Server, SQL Server, IIS, and Linux.
• Patient, friendly, and attentive, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and lead.

Responsibilities:

• Support, maintain, and continually improve our development estate so development teams can focus on their priorities and innovation.
• Design and implement application build, release, deployment, and configuration activities.
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to gather requirements, evaluate tools, and implement or update solutions.
• Build and execute test plans, provision environments, review application performance, assist with legacy system migrations, and triage and resolve operational issues.
• Ensure incidents run smoothly and operational knowledge is documented, available, and shared.
• Serve as a technical escalation point, solve problems, and adapt skills and knowledge as needed; eventually participate in a 24/7 escalation rota.
• Drive continuous, incremental improvement of systems and infrastructure, taking end-to-end ownership of development infrastructure and systems.
• Create proactive monitoring solutions using standard tools, mainly Zabbix and Elastic.
• Conduct root cause analysis for incidents and develop standard operational procedures and documentation.
• Develop and maintain self-managing infrastructure services and dashboards.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and advise on DevOps standards and practices.
• Coach and mentor software and DevOps engineering peers.
• Work with Lead DevOps Engineers, Systems Engineers, and developers, using frameworks, standards, and defined operational processes; help shape our adoption of SRE principles.
