Lead Software Engineer - Java/Spring Boot

Salary: £62,000 - 102,000 per year

Requirements:

• Formal training or certification in software engineering concepts, with applied experience
• Hands-on experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability
• Advanced proficiency in one or more programming languages, including Java
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining Spring Boot microservices, including REST APIs with JSON, dependency injection, configuration management, and actuator-based monitoring
• Proficiency in automation and continuous delivery methods
• Experience with relational and other databases, such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB
• Experience leading the effective use of approved AI-assisted software development tools for coding, code review, testing, or troubleshooting, and setting expectations for validating AI outputs for correctness, performance, and security
• Understanding of responsible AI use in engineering workflows, including data sensitivity, secure handling of inputs and outputs, and security and resiliency expectations; experience coaching engineers on safe, compliant adoption
• Proficiency across all aspects of the Software Development Life Cycle
• Advanced understanding of agile methodologies and practices such as CI/CD, pair programming, TDD, application resiliency, and security
• In-depth knowledge of the financial services industry and its IT systems
• Preferred: Experience with modern cloud technologies, such as AWS services and frameworks including S3, Lambda, and Athena
• Preferred: Practical cloud-native experience; AWS is preferred
• Preferred: Experience building and supporting centralized and decentralized data architectures, such as data lakes and data meshes

Responsibilities:

• Execute creative software solutions through design, development, and technical troubleshooting, using approaches beyond routine methods to build solutions and break down technical problems
• Develop secure, high-quality production code and review and debug code written by others
• Lead team adoption of enterprise-authorized AI-assisted engineering practices to improve code quality, delivery speed, and operational outcomes
• Establish consistent validation standards for AI-assisted work, including secure coding, peer review, and automated testing, and promote reuse of effective patterns across the team
• Apply Software Development Life Cycle tools, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized from automation
• Identify opportunities to eliminate or automate recurring issue remediation and improve the operational stability of software applications and systems
• Lead evaluation sessions with external vendors, startups, and internal teams to assess architectural designs, technical credentials, and suitability for existing systems and information architecture
