Principal Software Engineer - Platform Engineering

Salary: £62,000 - 102,000 per year

Requirements:

• We require formal training or certification such as a BSc, CKAD, Google Associate Cloud Engineer, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
• We require expert-level administration of a major cloud platform such as GCP, AWS, or Azure.
• We require mastery of Kubernetes administration and operator patterns.
• We require strong cloud networking expertise across the OSI networking model.
• We require strong proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies.
• We require proven, hands-on experience in system design, development, testing, and operational stability.
• We require advanced proficiency in modern languages such as Go, Java, or Kotlin.
• We require demonstrated technical leadership and cross-team collaboration.
• We require hands-on Security Engineering experience.
• We require demonstrated experience designing and leading adoption of agentic AI-enabled development practices using enterprise-authorized tools within the work environment across teams.
• We require strong understanding of responsible AI use and control expectations in engineering workflows, including security and resiliency implications, data sensitivity, and risk-based governance.
• We require the ability to influence senior technical leaders on safe scaling patterns and reuse.

Responsibilities:

• We work with senior stakeholders to define and drive the multi-year technical roadmap and long-term architectural strategy for platform engineering.
• We mentor and coach senior engineers across teams, elevate the technical bar, and champion Software Engineering Communities of Practice.
• We serve as the key technical liaison for product, business, and security stakeholders, translating technical decisions into business impact.
• We lead the design and delivery of composable, secure, and scalable infrastructure systems and capabilities.
• We own the operational stability of production systems, automate recurring issues, and establish DORA, SLIs, and SLOs for continuous improvement.
• We drive architectural standards and best practices across the organisation and lead technical evaluations with internal and external partners.
• We champion FinOps principles to drive cloud cost optimisation and guide performance tuning of distributed systems.
• We architect and govern agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows using enterprise-authorized tools to improve delivery speed, code quality, and operational outcomes at scale.
• We define guardrails for validation, security, resiliency, and reuse across teams.
• We apply knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized by automation at scale.
