Service Reliability Engineer

Salary: £60,000 - 90,000 per year

Requirements:

• In-depth technical knowledge and experience in the assigned area, with a thorough understanding of its underlying principles and concepts.
• Experience with Linux/Unix, middleware technologies such as JBoss, Tomcat, or GlassFish, and databases including Oracle, SQL, and MongoDB.
• Exposure to microservices, container platforms such as OpenShift, cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure, and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins and GitLab.
• Knowledge of monitoring and scheduling tools such as AppDynamics, ITRS, Observe, TWS, or AutoSys; Kafka/Kibana; and programming or scripting languages such as Python, Java, or Shell. AI/GenAI or ML knowledge is also relevant.
• Proven ability to provide production support, respond to incidents and escalated user queries, participate in Major Incident Management, and drive issues through to recovery.
• Strong communication and prioritization skills, including the ability to manage user expectations, coordinate across technical teams, and engage senior stakeholders.
• Experience identifying and implementing operational improvements; flexibility to support shift patterns, release activities, and occasional weekend support.
• Ability to analyze factual information, make evaluative judgements, solve problems using technical experience, and communicate complex or sensitive information.
• Ability to take responsibility for risk, controls, policy adherence, and work delivered in line with relevant rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.
• For leadership roles, ability to lead and supervise a team, allocate work, coordinate resources, and support colleagues professional development. Individual contributors are expected to develop technical expertise and advise where appropriate.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the IT Services department, set its strategic direction, and support the banks senior management team on technology service performance and risk.
• Develop and implement IT Services methodologies, processes, policies, procedures, departmental goals, and control standards.
• Lead and support IT Services colleagues, oversee performance and department effectiveness, and coordinate team resources where applicable.
• Manage stakeholder relationships and the quality of external third-party services; partner with other functions and business areas.
• Manage IT Services risk, identify and mitigate potential risks, maintain alignment with change and compliance functions, and strengthen controls.
• Monitor financial performance and costs, and drive value from commercial agreements.
• Manage IT Services projects, research, product launches, and delivery of integrated solutions.
• Monitor and maintain critical technology infrastructure, resolve complex technical issues, and minimize disruption to operations.
• Review service health dashboards, investigate alerts and incidents, respond to support queries, and help maintain platform service operations.
• Work with Development, Infrastructure, and Platform teams to troubleshoot issues, improve monitoring and observability, support platform releases, and identify automation and operational improvements.
• Contribute to incident and problem management, resolve production issues, and improve service resilience and reliability.
• Take responsibility for operational outcomes, escalate policy or procedure breaches, embed new risk-mitigation procedures, and support continuous improvement.
