Senior Enterprise Architect

Salary: £68,000 - 108,000 per year

Requirements:

• Proven ability to apply enterprise architecture principles to shape strategic options and assess enterprise-level impacts across complex programmes, portfolios or transformation initiatives.
• Experience of enterprise-level architectural analysis and shaping, including use of reference models and methodologies to inform early-stage decisions, trade-offs and recommendations.
• Ability to translate business strategy into enterprise IT capability outcomes, identifying strategic implications through capability-based planning and early-state design.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex architectural concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Solid foundation in IT and architectural domains, with understanding of commercial and sourcing approaches, commitment to continuous professional development, and either holding or willingness to obtain TOGAF certification.
• Demonstrates experience using enterprise architecture modelling approaches or tools, such as capability models or ABACUS.
• Demonstrates knowledge of one or more HMRC business domain, platform or transformation area.
• Demonstrates foundational awareness of commercial contracts, procurement or sourcing strategies.
• Demonstrates experience contributing to and influencing outcomes at architecture governance forums.
• Demonstrates experience of adopting best practice to shape informed design decisions.
• Either holds or is willing to acquire a professional IT qualification such as BCS Business Architecture or BCS Practitioner certificate in Enterprise and Solutions Architecture.

Responsibilities:

• Embed and drive the development of structured IT Capability-Based Impacting and architectural modelling to identify overlaps, synergies, and common needs across the organisation.
• Proactively shape and articulate the value of change and positively influence IT change throughout the E2ECL, in line with our IT Strategy.
• Identify and make informed recommendations for mitigating or addressing key enterprise-level constraints, risks, assumptions, and dependencies to inform decision-making and early strategic shaping of IT and Business Roadmaps and scope.
• Articulate the size, complexity, and cost driver implications of options on early or in-flight enterprise-level IT impacts, considering emerging technologies and aligned to strategic outcomes.
• Present, or support the team in presenting, enterprise-level IT impacts and progress updates in a manner tailored to the audience.
• Actively seek and welcome constructive feedback to drive continuous improvement.
• Provide strategy-based direction and consultation to solution architects on solution designs, technology choices and governance requirements.
• Provide an early view on deliverability that informs and influences the transition from baseline to target architecture for delivery planning.
• Provide enterprise-level architectural consultancy to improve proactive adherence to enterprise-level guardrails and efficiency of corporate and architectural governance throughout the E2ECL.
• Research various subjects and topics using internal and external resources and prepare, or support the team in preparing, briefings, findings, options and recommendations.
• Support Chief and Enterprise Architecture with ad-hoc commissions, both strategic and transitional, using a standardised and repeatable impacting methodology with approved reference models.
• Support and embed the articulation through Roadmaps or T-Maps that support business readiness and help set business expectations.
• Show commitment to nurturing a collaborative culture, encouraging open dialogue, idea-sharing, and continuous improvement across the team.

We set the strategic direction for technology design and architecture across HMRC so digital and technology investment is coherent, aligned to organisational priorities, and delivers real outcomes for customers and colleagues. Our ETA team provides enterprise-level architectural consultancy, analysis, and early strategic shaping services to support HMRCs transformation in line with the Future Operating State, 2030 Vision, and IT Strategy. We work across major initiatives in the Transformation Portfolio, collaborating with colleagues across CDIO, Business, Change Delivery, Commercial and Policy to bring a unique enterprise lens.
