Senior Staff Software Engineer

Salary: £63,000 - 103,000 per year

Requirements:

• Computer Science degree or equivalent commercial experience
• Extensive experience designing, building, and scaling distributed systems and microservices using Java or Python
• Experience working in large-scale, consumer-facing environments
• Deep expertise in modern software architecture, event-driven systems, API design, cloud-native development, CI/CD, automated testing practices, and Agile engineering methodologies
• Strong experience with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence technical strategy across an organisation
• Experience with AWS, TypeScript, React, Snowflake, Git, GitHub, GitHub Copilot, and Datadog would be advantageous
• Previous experience with Scala is desirable
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, containerisation, complex third-party API integrations, e-commerce platforms, or applying AI technologies to improve engineering productivity would be beneficial

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership and shape engineering strategy
• Lead the long-term architecture and technical strategy for distributed backend services
• Ensure systems remain highly available, secure, and capable of handling significant consumer traffic
• Drive initiatives from concept through to delivery
• Define engineering standards and best practices
• Remove technical bottlenecks
• Work closely with product, engineering managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver scalable, resilient solutions
• Guide critical technical discussions
• Mentor senior engineers
• Support hiring initiatives
• Help foster a collaborative engineering culture focused on continuous improvement
