Backend Engineer

Salary: £55,000 - 70,000 per year

Requirements:

• Strong academic background in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related scientific software field.
• Strong software engineering skills in modern languages, ideally Python and Rust.
• Experience designing systems and the APIs between them, including services that coordinate work, manage state, and handle failure.
• Focus on code quality.
• Mid-level to senior-level engineering experience.
• Some experience with cloud computing or HPC job management, such as Slurm.
• Knowledge of identity and authorization flows such as OIDC/OAuth2.
• Experience deploying containerized services on Linux, such as Podman.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Ansible or OpenTofu.
• Familiarity with modern Python tooling and packaging, such as uv.
• Experience with data storage and pipelines, including large simulation results and model serving.
• Experience with APIs, REST, WebSockets, such as FastAPI.

Responsibilities:

• Join our dedicated team as a Backend Engineer and help design the platform layer.
• Work collaboratively with engineers and scientists on complex engineering systems.
• Contribute to the design of systems and the APIs between them.
• Build services that coordinate work, manage state, and handle failure.
• Support the development of cloud or HPC-based workflows.
• Help shape backend architecture with a strong emphasis on code quality.
