Senior Java Developer
Job Description
Salary: £30,000 - 60,000 per year
Requirements:- Strong commercial experience with Java
- Extensive experience developing REST APIs using Spring Boot
- Experience writing unit tests using JUnit
- Strong understanding of JSON structures and data formats
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including containerising applications, deploying and managing microservices, and troubleshooting deployments within containerised environments
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery teams
- Proven track record delivering solutions within complex enterprise environments
- Experience with any of the following is advantageous: JPA, Kibana, Maven, Mockito, AWS, GitLab, Helm, OpenAPI, SQL, Shell Scripting
- Experience working within large, complex technical environments, ideally within regulated industries such as Banking, Financial Services, Insurance, Utilities, Telecommunications, or similar
- Design, develop and maintain Java-based microservices and APIs
- Build and enhance RESTful services using Spring Boot
- Develop robust, scalable and secure backend solutions
- Containerise and deploy applications using Kubernetes
- Write and maintain automated unit tests
- Collaborate effectively within Agile Scrum teams
- Support the modernisation of legacy platforms and services
- Contribute to technical design discussions and architectural decisions
- Participate in code reviews and uphold engineering best practices
- Utilise AI-assisted development tools where appropriate to improve analysis, design, development, testing and code quality

We are seeking experienced Senior Java Developers to join the COTAX Futures Team within Tax Administration, supporting a major programme focused on the modernisation of HMRC legacy services. You will work within agile Scrum teams alongside Java Engineers, Front End Developers and Quality Engineers to deliver scalable, cloud-native solutions and modern microservices architecture. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a large-scale digital transformation programme operating within a complex, enterprise-level environment. The role is based in Telford with onsite working requirements depending on project needs, offered on a 12-month contract at a rate of £550 per day, and requires BPSS clearance. Previous public sector experience is desirable but not essential, and candidates from public sector, banking, financial services, insurance, utilities, telecommunications and other highly regulated industries are particularly welcome.
