Senior Software Engineer - Backend - Manchester

Salary: £61,000 - 93,000 per year

Requirements:

• Strong commercial backend software engineering experience
• C# and .NET or comparable experience building modern backend applications
• Experience designing and developing APIs
• Experience building distributed systems and service-oriented architectures
• Experience developing cloud-native applications, ideally within AWS
• Experience working with messaging, asynchronous processing, or event-driven architecture
• Experience designing reliable integrations with external or internal systems
• Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL data stores
• Experience building scalable systems handling significant traffic or data volumes
• Experience with performance optimisation, caching, and latency reduction
• Experience designing for resilience and failure
• Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with observability, monitoring, and operating production systems
• Experience with automated testing and modern engineering practices
• Strong engineering fundamentals and evidence of solving comparable problems at scale
• Ability to independently solve complex engineering problems
• Ability to think about customer and commercial impact of technical decisions
• Understanding of trade-offs between speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
• Ability to contribute meaningfully to technical and architectural discussions
• Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical colleagues
• Ability to raise engineering standards through collaboration
• Ability to help less experienced engineers develop
• Comfort working in an environment where priorities and problems can change quickly
• Eligible to work full-time in the UK

Responsibilities:

• Design and build scalable backend applications and services
• Develop APIs used by customer-facing applications and internal systems
• Integrate with external suppliers and third-party platforms
• Build systems that process high volumes of requests and data
• Design distributed and event-driven architectures
• Work with asynchronous messaging and streaming technologies
• Solve problems around performance, latency, resilience, and availability
• Improve caching and data-access strategies
• Build reliable transactional workflows
• Develop applications and services within AWS
• Deploy and operate containerised applications
• Improve monitoring, alerting, and observability
• Explore AI-assisted engineering and modern development tooling
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other technical specialists to design, build, deploy, and operate reliable software at scale
• Consider how systems behave in production and identify failure scenarios
