BMS & OT Systems Engineer

Salary: £45,000 - 85,000 per year

Requirements:

• We require an apprenticeship, HNC/HND, bachelors degree, or equivalent experience in Building Services Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation, or a similar field.
• We require strong hands-on experience in BMS or industrial controls engineering, ideally across a multi-site operational estate.
• We require proven ability to diagnose, commission, and optimise BMS systems in live operational environments.
• We require working knowledge of OT communications and integration protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, OPC, LonWorks, or equivalent.
• We require experience managing BMS/OT servers, databases, backups, and platform lifecycle.
• We require a strong understanding of OT engineering governance, including documentation, change control, and evidence-based commissioning.
• We require comfort working in critical environments where uptime, safety, and service continuity are key priorities.
• We consider vendor platform training or certifications desirable, including Trend, Siemens, Schneider, Honeywell, or Tridium Niagara.
• We consider awareness of OT security principles such as segmentation, access control, remote connectivity controls, patch governance, and recoverability desirable.
• Familiarity with frameworks such as IEC 62443, NIST, or CIS is advantageous but not essential.
• OT or cyber awareness certifications such as IEC 62443 fundamentals or GIAC GICSP are desirable but not required.

Responsibilities:

• We act as the engineering lead for the day-to-day health and integrity of BMS and OT platforms across the portfolio.
• We support BMS fault diagnosis, performance optimisation, and strategy improvements across plant and systems.
• We lead lifecycle engineering activities including software upgrades, controller refreshes, server and workstation replacement, and platform migrations.
• We support commissioning, testing, tuning, and validation of control strategies, alarms, trends, and system performance.
• We own engineering standards and technical quality for BMS works delivered by vendors and subcontractors.
• We ensure systems remain safe, reliable, and performant in a live operational environment.
• We support and maintain OT/BMS connectivity, including switches, segmentation, topology, and OT integration pathways.
• We work with IT and network teams to ensure OT/BMS systems are integrated using approved patterns such as segmentation, boundary control, and remote connectivity.
• We maintain accurate OT documentation, including network diagrams, panel and controller drawings, schematics, asset registers, and configuration records.
• We support integration of OT-connected assets such as meters, UPS/generators, chillers, lighting controls, and specialist systems.
• We embed practical security controls into OT engineering practice, including patch and update coordination, hardening, access management, backup and recovery assurance.
• We ensure remote vendor access follows agreed approval processes and technical safeguards.
• We support vulnerability management by assessing findings, advising on practical remediation, and coordinating execution during maintenance windows.
• We participate in resilience testing and assurance activities relating to the OT and BMS estate.
• We provide practical guidance to site teams and vendors to reduce operational risk while sustaining uptime.
• We enforce structured OT change control, including technical review, testing approach, rollback planning, and evidence capture.
• We ensure vendor works comply with required technical governance, including method statements, access approvals, commissioning records, and as-built documentation.
• We maintain configuration control and system baselines, including versions, controller backups, databases, and golden builds.
• We provide reporting inputs to client stakeholders on OT system performance, risk issues, and improvement delivery.
• We act as the technical interface between site operations teams, BMS vendors, specialist service providers, IT, network and security stakeholders, and client operational resilience representatives.
• We review and approve BMS vendor technical proposals, designs, and implementation plans.
• We drive consistent engineering OT practices and handover standards across sites.
