Job Description

Salary: £30,000 - 50,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Experience in enterprise-scale architectural judgement and the ability to operate effectively amid ambiguity, competing priorities and regulatory constraints.
  • Strong commercial, risk and value orientation, with the ability to translate architectural decisions into measurable business and operational outcomes.
  • Credibility with CIO, Product, Engineering and Risk leadership, influencing through evidence, clarity and decision discipline rather than authority alone.
  • Deep understanding of modern software engineering, including agentic SDLC, cloud platforms, integration architectures and data patterns.
  • Ability to abstract technical detail when engaging at executive level.
  • Proven capability in leading through others and shaping behaviour and outcomes across delivery teams without direct line management.
  • Confident communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex architectural trade-offs succinctly for executive audiences and governance forums.
  • Knowledge of business process re-engineering, cost-benefit analysis, data modelling, infrastructure engineering, innovation, IT governance, requirements analysis, Scrum software development, security systems and systems design.
  • Ability to apply architectural modelling techniques such as UML, C4 or equivalent.
  • Strong awareness of security practices, resilience, regulatory expectations and bank/enterprise governance frameworks.
Responsibilities:
  • Own, shape and assure end-to-end solution architecture and decisions within a clearly defined business or technology domain.
  • Be accountable for decision quality, risk posture and the long-term sustainability of outcomes.
  • Partner with CIO, Product and Engineering leadership to balance delivery speed, operational resilience, regulatory compliance, cost efficiency and architectural integrity.
  • Act as a key change role within the delivery and governance framework, accountable for architectural outcomes and governance.
  • Design, evolve and maintain solutions as enduring products aligned to business strategy, domain roadmaps and enterprise architecture intent.
  • Own material architectural decisions within the domain, including technology selection, integration patterns, data flows and non-functional trade-offs.
  • Ensure solutions are delivery-feasible, operationally viable and economically sound.
  • Provide clear architectural intent and direction, enabling autonomous delivery teams while maintaining coherence at scale.
  • Lead workload placement decisions and maximise the benefits of cloud-native capabilities.
  • Shape how platform capabilities and shared services are leveraged within the domain.
  • Ensure solutions meet security, resilience and regulatory expectations.
  • Own the architectural risk position of solutions and balance requirements with delivery objectives and long-term operational stability.
  • Consider run-cost, change-cost and capacity impacts in all designs.
  • Contribute to investment prioritisation and sequencing using architectural insight to improve economic outcomes.
  • Champion standardised platforms, AI, patterns and services, and feed unmet needs into platform and enterprise roadmaps.
  • Drive systemic improvement of the architecture and engineering ecosystem, reducing duplication and improving time-to-value.
  • Partner with Engineering and Operations leaders to support production stability, fault resolution and performance optimisation for architecturally significant services.
  • Ensure architectural decisions are operationalised effectively across the full lifecycle.
  • Provide architecture inputs for governance, risk, privacy, security and records-management processes.
  • Represent the domain architecture position confidently in senior forums, with clarity on trade-offs and residual risks.
  • Mentor other architects and contribute to architecture operating-model evolution, including role clarity, decision frameworks and domain alignment.
