z/OS Mainframe Storage Engineer

Salary: £41,000 - 81,000 per year

Requirements:

• Typically 8 to 15+ years of experience in mainframe infrastructure and z/OS storage administration.
• Strong hands-on experience supporting IBM z/OS storage environments in large-scale enterprise organizations.
• Experience with IBM DS8000 series storage, virtual tape systems, disaster recovery solutions, and storage management products.
• Proven experience managing storage capacity, backup and recovery, replication technologies, and enterprise storage operations.
• Experience in banking, financial services, insurance, or other highly regulated, mission-critical environments preferred.
• Strong expertise in IBM DS8000 series storage (including DS8870 and DS8K family), DSCLI, GDPS, PPRC Metro Mirror, DFHSM, DFSMS, ICKDSF, SMS, SRM customization, and z/OS IODF administration.
• Experience installing and upgrading IBM storage hardware and software.
• Strong understanding of mainframe disk storage management, storage provisioning, capacity planning, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery.
• Experience supporting TS7720 virtual tape systems, storage grid architectures, and PPRC replication environments.
• Experience with EMC DLm virtual tape systems, including installation, upgrades, and configuration.
• Experience with Broadcom/Brocade storage networking solutions and FICON connectivity.
• Strong knowledge of z/OS, JCL, job scheduling, and mainframe storage infrastructure.
• Experience using SMP/E and z/OSMF for software maintenance and deployment.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Desired experience with CA-1, CA Vantage, CA Disk, TDMF/TDMFS, NetView, System Automation (SA z/OS), and CA OPS/MVS.
• Storage performance monitoring and reporting, enterprise-scale storage migrations, storage automation, or infrastructure modernization experience is desirable.
• Familiarity with IBM Parallel Sysplex and GDPS high-availability architectures, global data centers, geographically dispersed environments, and audit, compliance, or regulatory requirements is desirable.
• IBM Storage or IBM Z certifications preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Manage mainframe disk and storage administration, including installation, removal, upgrades, updates, provisioning, restoration, and ongoing support.
• Perform daily operational activities, health checks, monitoring, incident management, and issue resolution.
• Plan and implement storage capacity expansions, infrastructure changes, and long-term capacity planning.
• Configure, administer, and maintain storage resources for databases, VSAM files, work datasets, and sort spaces.
• Administer and support storage management products, including CA Disk and related utilities.
• Install, test, evaluate, and maintain storage hardware and software solutions, including z/OS-related products using SMP/E and z/OSMF.
• Perform z/OS hardware planning, including IODF maintenance, LPAR configuration, HMC administration, and associated system changes.
• Administer backup, recovery, archival, replication, and disaster recovery solutions; participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
• Manage storage volume allocation and report on capacity and utilization.
• Perform root cause analysis for storage-related incidents and implement preventive actions.
• Collaborate with systems programming, network, database, application, and global infrastructure teams, vendors, and business stakeholders.
• Use automation tools such as NetView, System Automation, and CA OPS/MVS to improve efficiency and automate repetitive administration and monitoring tasks.
• Design, implement, and support IBM zSeries storage architectures and solutions.
• Monitor storage utilization, performance, and health to help ensure high availability, resilience, and optimal performance.
• Maintain compliance with security, governance, audit, and operational standards.
• Support critical incident resolution, maintenance activities, infrastructure upgrades, and storage migrations.
• Maintain technical documentation, implementation plans, operational procedures, and support runbooks.
• Drive operational excellence through automation, standardization, and continuous improvement, demonstrating ownership, accountability, and technical leadership.
• Provide after-hours and weekend support for maintenance windows and production incidents as required.
