Salary: £52,000 - 92,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Demonstrable experience leading a data engineering team or workstream, setting technical direction, reviewing others work, and being the escalation point for the team.
  • Experience collaborating with Electricity Transmission to identify where data products can improve business performance.
  • Experience in stakeholder and user engagement, including communication requirements and business readiness.
  • Experience in data mining and manipulation for large datasets, data profiling, and writing ETL code for data quality rules and analysis.
  • Experience working within or product managing a data development environment, acting as a stakeholder contact, and delivering insight within a team.
  • Ability to understand risk and controls and to track and monitor them.
  • Working knowledge of modern data architecture patterns, including data mesh, data fabric, Lakehouse, and domain-oriented ownership models.
  • Knowledge and experience of query language, data mesh methods, and data transformation tools, including SQL and Python, with C# desirable.
  • Experience with data engineering tools such as Microsoft ADF and DBT.
  • Experience with database and fabric tools such as Snowflake, Promethium, and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience with data visualisation tools such as Microsoft Power BI and Tableau.
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git and DataOps.live, and CI/CD for data pipelines.
  • Experience supporting data science and AI/ML workloads as a consumer of the pipelines you build.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate or other specialist cloud or DevOps certifications desirable.
Responsibilities:
  • We work with National Grid Electricity Transmission to deliver actionable data products that drive business performance.
  • We collaborate with key stakeholders to understand business challenges, identify the most impactful data, and translate this into business requirements.
  • We lead the design, build, and delivery of data products and pipelines that support Electricity Transmissions performance ambitions.
  • We take technical accountability for the solutions our team ships.
  • We set and maintain engineering standards, including design patterns, coding standards, code review, testing, CI/CD, and deployment practices.
  • We mentor and develop data engineers across the team and wider community.
  • We own the implementation of data products and ensure business readiness for product implementation.
  • We engage with stakeholders to ensure the data drives action and is continuously improved.
  • We identify opportunities to increase business value by simplifying transformation and aligning products to Electricity Transmissions strategic priorities.
  • We work with system, solution, and data architects to shape target-state architecture, integration patterns, interface contracts, data modelling approaches, and non-functional requirements.
  • We own data governance and data quality frameworks and controls, ensuring requirements and policies are considered throughout development and operation.
  • We analyse insight to identify trends, articulate business performance issues, and suggest options to improve business outcomes.
  • We manage the data product lifecycle, keeping the insight roadmap current and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

This role sits within our Electricity Transmission business and supports engineers, operational teams, planners, performance and regulatory teams by ensuring they have accessible, easy-to-use data.
