Senior Director of Machine Learning

Salary: £71,000 - 99,000 per year

Requirements:

• We are looking for substantial experience in machine learning, with significant experience leading managers and senior technical teams in a complex, scaled organisation.
• We want a track record of shipping production machine learning at scale, ideally in personalization, recommendations, search/ranking, or similar, to large consumer traffic with measurable business impact.
• We value experience building, scaling, or restructuring an ML or data-science organization, including the change-management skills to consolidate and align teams without disrupting delivery.
• We need the ability to operate as an executive peer, influencing Director- and VP-level partners across Product and Engineering and shaping strategy, not just execution.
• We seek strong technical depth as a player-coach in modern ML, experimentation, and MLOps, with the ability to set direction, review architecture, and hold the scientific bar.
• We require strong grounding in experimentation and statistics, including A/B testing, causal inference, and rigorous measurement of impact.
• We prefer an MS or PhD in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent depth of applied experience.
• We expect excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex ML concepts into business decisions for technical and non-technical audiences alike.

Responsibilities:

• We will ask you to spearhead our Machine Learning, Data Science, and Experimentation efforts, reporting to the Vice President of Engineering.
• You will shape our ML and AI strategy and help us leverage our data assets to drive growth and competitive advantage.
• You will build and lead a unified ML organization by consolidating and growing ML scientists into a hub-and-spoke model.
• You will define the operating model, decision rights, and service commitments so product areas maintain momentum through the change.
• You will own the personalization strategy for recommendation, ranking, and search-relevance systems that personalize the traveler journey.
• You will lead data science and experimentation, including predictive modeling, causal inference, A/B testing, guardrail metrics, and measurement of incremental business impact.
• You will shape our generative-AI direction, including LLM-based applications, retrieval-augmented generation, automated content, and related experiences.
• You will grow, develop, and retain the team by shaping career ladders, dual technical/management tracks, hiring, promotions, and research-to-production standards.
• You will own production ML health, including deployment, retraining, monitoring, governance, and service levels in partnership with our MLOps infrastructure team.
• You will partner across the company to translate commercial strategy into an ML roadmap with Product, Engineering, Design, and Analytics leadership.
• You will represent ML in executive planning and connect model performance to business outcomes.
