Data Engineering Manager

Salary: £85,000 - 85,000 per year

Requirements:

• We need hands-on cloud data engineering experience on AWS; this is non-negotiable.
• We need people management and team leadership experience.
• We need strong SQL and T-SQL skills.
• We need experience with ETL/ELT pipelines, SSIS, Matillion, or similar tools.
• We need data visualisation experience.
• We need awareness of Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform or similar.
• We need stakeholder management experience.
• It would be beneficial to have experience with real-time and event-driven data platforms.
• It would be beneficial to have experience with lakehouse or cloud-native data platform architecture.
• It would be beneficial to have experience with data lakes, object storage, and large-scale analytical processing.
• It would be beneficial to have exposure to ML or advanced analytics.
• It would be beneficial to have knowledge of AWS security, networking, and access control.
• It would be beneficial to have awareness of GDPR and data governance.
• We cannot offer sponsorship and the role is not suitable for those on short-term visas.

Responsibilities:

• We will lead and develop our data engineering squad, including performance conversations, career development, and day-to-day support.
• We will get hands-on across pipelines, cloud infrastructure, transformation layers, and reporting.
• We will drive the migration toward real-time, event-driven data processing.
• We will keep our existing SQL Server environments stable and performant while the modern platform is built out.
• We will work closely with stakeholders across the business to understand requirements and deliver solutions.
• We will embed good engineering practices such as CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and Agile where they are not already in place.
• We will mentor colleagues and help grow capability across the team.

We are a hypergrowth business in Manchester with new PE investment and a major transformation underway. We are building a significant data platform transformation from the ground up, moving away from traditional batch processing toward a real-time, event-driven, cloud-native, AI-ready architecture. This is a hands-on leadership seat at the table during a period of genuine change, with a newly centralised data function, a signed-off transformation programme, and a new Data Director creating something impressive. The role is hybrid, with three days per week in Manchester city centre, and includes a salary of £88,000 plus 27 days holiday plus bank holidays, your birthday off, enhanced parental leave, income protection, life assurance, health cash plan, virtual GP and therapy access, gym discounts, cycle to work, free food, and a Friday bar.
