MS SQL Database Administrator

Salary: £45,000 - 60,000 per year

Requirements:

• We are looking for hands-on SQL Server DBA experience in a production environment.
• We want experience in high-volume, real-time transactional environments with high concurrency and uptime requirements, such as logistics, e-commerce, or financial systems.
• We need advanced SQL skills, including complex queries, stored procedures, CTEs, window functions, schema design, indexing strategies, and triggers.
• We want a deep understanding of query performance tuning, execution plans, and indexing.
• We need knowledge of locking, blocking, and deadlocks.
• We want experience with performance monitoring tools such as Profiler, Extended Events, and DMVs.
• We need knowledge of SQL Server Agent and automation.
• We want experience with SSAS and SSRS.
• We need a strong understanding of database security and access control.
• We want experience managing backups, restores, and maintenance plans.
• Desirable: knowledge of High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions and business continuity planning.
• Desirable: familiarity with MySQL and cloud-based managed database services such as AWS RDS and Azure SQL.
• Desirable: exposure to data warehousing and ETL processes, including support for reporting and analytics workloads.
• Desirable: experience supporting BI, reporting, and dashboarding solutions, including Microsoft Power BI.
• Desirable: exposure to modern analytics and AI-assisted business intelligence capabilities within platforms such as Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Copilot, or cloud AI/ML services.
• Desirable: experience with monitoring tools.
• We require the ability to work in Cannock every day.

Responsibilities:

• We write, optimise, and maintain SQL code to support business and operational systems.
• We develop and enhance stored procedures, views, functions, and advanced query constructs.
• We design and maintain database schema using DDL, including tables, indexes, constraints, and triggers.
• We ensure data integrity, consistency, and quality across all systems.
• We support developers and analysts with efficient and scalable data access patterns.
• We monitor and proactively improve database performance across live environments.
• We identify and resolve performance bottlenecks using execution plans, query analysis, and index/statistics optimisation.
• We manage and optimise transactions, locking, blocking, and deadlocks.
• We conduct real-time troubleshooting of performance issues impacting operations.
• We use tools such as SQL Profiler and Extended Events to diagnose performance issues.
• We investigate and resolve production incidents and perform root cause analysis.
• We manage database security, including users, roles, and permissions.
• We ensure adherence to security best practices, data protection standards, and compliance requirements.
• We support SQL Server BI capabilities, including SSAS cube preparation and SSRS report development and maintenance.
• We create, manage, and monitor SQL Server Agent jobs.
• We automate routine database operations, including backups and maintenance tasks.
• We implement and maintain database maintenance activities, including index and performance optimisation.
• We support capacity planning and scalability improvements.
• We design, manage, and test backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes.
• We perform database server administration, including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and storage management.
