Requirements:
  • Proven experience delivering or evaluating AI/ML solutions.
  • Experience providing technical advice, review or assurance for AI/ML systems.
  • Ability to assess evidence, identify limitations and make practical recommendations.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Defence, maritime or other relevant government-sector experience is an advantage.
  • At least 4 years of applied artificial intelligence and machine learning experience.
  • BPSS screening is mandatory and must be completed before starting; candidates must be willing to undergo screening if they have not already completed it.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide specialist advice on the suitability and limitations of proposed AI/ML approaches.
  • Review model evaluation, data quality, uncertainty and validation considerations.
  • Support our teams review of architecture, integration requirements and future capability options.
  • Contribute to technical discussions, workshops and reports.
  • Explain findings and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced AI/ML professional to provide expert advice and technical assurance for a short maritime defence project. The engagement focuses on reviewing AI/ML approaches, informing architectural decisions and supporting capability planning; it does not involve hands-on software development. The part-time advisory contract requires a few days per month until December 2026, with the allocation agreed in advance. It is largely remote, with meetings and workshops in London as required, and is described as hybrid remote in London. The anticipated start is 5 October 2026 or as soon as possible. The stated day rate is £550–£650 depending on relevant experience, based on an eight-hour day; the posting also lists pay up to £600 per day. Agreed travel expenses are reimbursed separately.
