Job Description

Salary: £65,000 - 105,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years designing cloud-native, distributed systems, including 5+ years operating at cross-team architect level (Software Architect, Principal Engineer, Staff+ or equivalent); scope of impact matters more than title.
  • Deep expertise in cloud services, ideally AWS, API and service design, and distributed-systems patterns such as microservices, event-driven design, and resilience.
  • Solid grounding in data modeling and schema design, including schema definition languages such as JSON Schema, versioning, compatibility, and evolution strategies for schemas and API contracts. Data-warehouse or analytics specialization is not required.
  • Strong knowledge of software design and architecture patterns.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and align teams beyond your direct management.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with experience guiding and growing diverse, cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively to varied stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate with a global team.
  • Preferred, not required: experience with AWS services such as EC2, ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, and RDS; domain-driven service decomposition; CQRS, event sourcing, sagas, and multi-tenant or multi-region design; REST and GraphQL API design; relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL and DynamoDB; and observability tools and practices such as OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, metrics, and SLOs.
  • Additional advantageous experience includes semantic technologies (knowledge graphs, RDF/OWL, or property graphs); BIM, Revit families, or parametric modeling; AI systems such as RAG, agents/MCP, agentic orchestration, LLM observability, and AI data governance and safety; AEC-specific AI, BIM/IFC extraction, CAD, or point-cloud processing; Kafka or Kinesis, schema registries, and exactly-once processing; and AEC industry knowledge or standards such as IFC, COBie, gbXML, CityGML, LandXML, UniFormat, or OmniClass. Domain onboarding is provided, and emerging AI/ML experience is not a prerequisite.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and evolve API surfaces across AEC Data services, including resource modeling, addressing, versioning, backward-compatible evolution, query APIs, and coherent contracts across overlapping surfaces.
  • Define and evolve cross-team, cloud-native architecture for AEC Data services, including distributed systems, service contracts, and event-driven flows.
  • Design, document, and evolve schemas for AEC domain entities, including semantic models, property sets, classification systems, and relationship hierarchies; manage schema versioning, compatibility, deprecation, migration, the schema registry, validation rules, and quality checks.
  • Establish architecture standards, reference architectures, and reusable components; author proposals and architecture decision records for cross-organization review, and lead cross-team design reviews.
  • Model and prototype alternative architectural directions to assess feasibility and reduce risk before broad adoption.
  • Mentor engineers and fellow architects in technologies and architectural practice, and strengthen technical depth across teams.
  • Ensure system reliability, security, and performance; define SLOs and advance observability through metrics, tracing, and logging.
  • Communicate architecture through clear views and diagrams, such as C4, and executive-ready narratives; create comprehensive documentation and onboarding materials.

More:

We are Autodesk, a company whose software helps innovators create and make products, buildings, infrastructure, and entertainment. We are committed to a diverse, inclusive culture where people can do meaningful work and help build a better world. Our AEC Data organization is building foundational data infrastructure and the AEC Data Model (AECDM) to connect information across the built-asset lifecycle—from design and construction through operation and maintenance—and across Autodesk products and third-party integrations. As a senior individual contributor on our established architecture track, you will join the AEC Data team, report to its Distinguished Architect, and help shape cloud-native services and distributed-systems architecture across multiple teams. You will collaborate with architects, domain experts, and product teams working across Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Autodesk Forma, contributing to the next generation of Autodesk Forma Industry Cloud capabilities. This role is focused on cloud and services architecture, not data warehousing or analytics, and shapes how teams build through standards, reference architectures, decision records, and design governance rather than ownership of a single service. We offer the opportunity to shape AEC data platforms and standards, collaborate with architects and engineers across our AEC portfolio, contribute to interoperability initiatives, and work in a culture that values technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning. Compensation is based on experience and geographic location; our package may include base salary, annual cash bonuses, sales commissions where applicable, stock grants, and comprehensive benefits. The role is full-time and offsite/home-based in the United Kingdom (EMEA). In-person onboarding or identity verification may be required.
